On Thursday, the Vatican announced that Pope Benedict XVI would soon be tweeting from his own personal account, perhaps before the year’s end. But does this news mean anything to marketers?
Consider this: Twitter is increasingly becoming a respected form of communication.
Regardless of your feelings toward the Pope, he is held in high honor by millions of people across the world. His usage of Twitter could propel the view that the social media site isn’t just useful to college kids—it’s a tool for anyone to get their message to the masses.
Not that this idea is new anymore. We’ve seen in this past election how both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney used Twitter to reach the people. Yet with the Pope’s adoption of the social media tool, we see another example of how leaders are increasingly turning to social media outlets for the distribution of information.

According to ABC News, “Benedict, who writes longhand and doesn’t normally use a computer, will more likely sign off on tweets written in his name.” It isn’t the first time the 85-year-old Pope has taken to the Twittersphere, having sent his first tweet in June of last year. And earlier this year, the Pope tweeted one message a day for the 40 days of Lent.
So if you’ve got a client who is a leader in any capacity, and they aren’t already tweeting, now might be a good time to get them on the site. The President is, the Pope will be, and they’ll be glad you brought them there.
