Trends & News

Safer Internet Day Is Today image 22ee762c ac4b 4646 a51e 714ce0b7bb01The internet is daily growing faster, easier to use, and more conducive to online business. Looking back over just a year of internet history and you can’t help but be amazed at how quickly it expands and how fast it improves. Businesses large and small and the agencies that help them have benefitted immensely; some wouldn’t even exist without the internet. But there’s also a darker side of the net which doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Security Is Essential for Business

If you’ve been paying attention to some recent news, you’d know that a lot has been going on in terms of internet security. Recently, Twitter was hacked, possibly having 250,000 of its users’ data accessed. Also recently, the New York Times reported they were the victim of Chinese cyber attacks, along with The Washington Post, and Bloomberg News.

It doesn’t stop there. In the last week or so, one hacker group – Anonymous – has been busy as well. They recently took down US Department of Justice websites in protest over the death of internet activist Aaron Swartz. Even yesterday they released the personal information of 4,000 bank executives in the US. For people and governments who know what they are doing, the internet isn’t as secure as people think it is. Even Japan hosted a government sponsored hackathon yesterday to improve its own cybersecurity; that’s how serious internet security is. Some of these hackers operate out of protest, some out of malicious intent, and others hack to help. But there’s no denying security is a serious issue online.

Without the security of our private information, online business would suffer. It works pretty well, but that’s mostly because the internet is vast and hackers can’t hit everyone all the time. Companies are at times negligent towards their security policies, which can leave consumers’ information threatened or easily stolen, lowering their confidence in online business in general.

Safer Internet Day

February 5th is international Safer Internet Day. Their site states that their goal is to “promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.” Their site also has lots of good information about how you can help everyone on the internet go about their online activities in a safer manner. A lot of online security comes down to users and ensuring they are educated and have the proper software for basic protection.
