Social Media Advertising Will Be Included In Election Expenditure Says EC image election commission of india

Meghalaya and Nagaland will witness elections pretty soon. According to The Hindu, the Governors of both the states have notified that February 23rd, 2012 is the elections date for the Legislative Assemblies in both the states. Both the assemblies have 60 members each and the Election Commission has set up 2,485 polling stations in Meghalaya and 2,023 in Nagaland. The EC from this year has also announced that any kind of social media advertisement carried out by contestants would be included in the election expenditure of the candidates, as reported by Times Of India.

The move to add social media advertising in the elections expenditure was promoted by the media during an interaction with the team of EC in Shillong. During the interactions, the media persons pointed out to Padma Angmo, deputy secretary of the media guidelines cell of EC that some of the candidates are running paid ads and promoted posts on the popular social networking site, Facebook. On hearing this the EC has decided that any kind of paid advertising performed on social networking sites would be taken under the EC scanner.

This is a very interesting move taken by the EC considering the elections in both the states. Elections are going to engulf the country in different states and at the center in the coming future. Along with this, we have also noticed that political parties are getting serious about social media. Though it is highly debatable that how many of them understand social media. But barring that part, one thing is sure that there would be a lot of investments on social and advertisement would be one of them.

Facebook being the largest and the most popular network in India will definitely have more takers in terms of social advertising. So accountability of such expenses on social networking sites should not be overlooked and by taking it under the EC scanner India has played it right.
