I came across this article, “How to Make Money Through Social Media Marketing“ – It is a must read article. It really gets to the heart of this issue.
My favorite quote in the article is this one,
Remember, social media marketing is a tactic, not a business model. If you want to make money, you have to have something to offer.
This took me awhile to realize. In the beginning, I really thought I could make a business model out of it. I quickly learned that was not going to happen. It really pains me to hear people say they are not using any other forms of marketing and are using social media exclusively. I am telling you it does not work. You really have to watch your time and resources with social media and find a way to make it work for you.
Some areas I am finding success and return from a money standpoint.

In my last post, I talked about being a social media advocate. I am working on a plan to realize more of a return in this area. I think there is a lot of potential here and I am learning and reading more about this area each day.

Personal Branding and Company Branding – Having two separate blogs, (Marketing Blog and Company Blog) is helping me from a content standpoint connect with the best people and it is helping my company brand gain traffic in niche markets where people are finding us through internet searches.
Social media has taught me the the value of keeping in contact with current clients and keeping those lines of communication open. I have learned to take this step off-line. You can’t assume everyone is on social media and it actually works better if you use other methods of communication. That being said, everyone wants to be in the know and companies are learning new ways to become more transparent and easier to reach. (This is is the key takeaway here!) Good companies understand this and embrace this.
Finally, As the article points out in tip #2, you have to show people why they should buy from you. Again, the way you communicate your message speaks volumes. People want to connect with great people and great companies. Companies need to be there for their clients and show value. This can be done in a number of ways. The key is to be different from your competition. People remember companies that are different.
Now go make some money and come up with a tactic using social media.
