Turn the TV on around Christmastime and you are bound to come across a modern holiday classic. Throughout the season director Bob Clark’s “A Christmas Story” can be found playing nearly non-stop on the boobtube.
If there is anything to be thankful for this holiday season, it’s this charming film. After all, if your family is fighting–like all families do–you can sit down with some eggnog and drown out the season’s stresses with Ralphie and the gang.
If you can’t tell, “A Christmas Story” is one of Movoto Real Estate’s favorite holiday films, eclipsing even “Home Alone” and “A Christmas Vacation.” Most of our team tries to catch at least a small portion of the 1983 film between family obligations.
With this in mind, we decided to figure out just how much Ralphie’s home would cost in the real world. Think of it as Movoto’s holiday present to you, our loyal novelty real estate readers.

The History of A Christmas Story
Before we get into the price, some brief background–as if you needed it! “A Christmas Story” follows 9-year-old Ralphie as he attempts to get a Red Ryder BB Gun (complete with compass in the stock) for Christmas.
The film, based off of Jean Shepherd’s book “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash”, is set in a fictional Indiana town; however, the principal shooting location was Cleveland, Ohio.
While “A Christmas Story” is now a fan favorite, it wasn’t always so. When it debuted more than a quarter century ago, the film was met with moderate enthusiasm.
Vincent Canby, writing for the New York Times, put it this way: “There are a number of small, unexpectedly funny moments in ”A Christmas Story,” but you have to possess the stamina of a pearl diver to find them.“
Our option: Lies!
The film’s popularity grew regularly, eventually earning a 24-hour marathon, which is currently shown on TBS.
Now that you know the history, how much would it cost to move into Ralphie’s abode? At least $53,000
Here’s how we did it.
Cleveland Does It Right
Cleveland, the snowy city in northern Ohio, gets knocked on a lot—especially during the football season. But in this case, Forest City came through with a win—finally. “A Christmas Story” was filmed in Cleveland. Not only that, but the film used a real home in the area.
It turns out that Ralphie’s home, which we assumed was a set, is located at 3159 West 11th St. More interesting, however, is that unlike other famous movie homes, this quaint Victorian has been turned into a museum dedicated to film. (Yes, you can purchase a leg lamp at its gift shop.)
According to Wikipedia, in 2004 Brian Jones, a San Diego entrepreneur, purchased the home. It was a smart business move. Jones owns The Red Rider Leg Lamp Company, which produces replicas of the “major award” Ralphie’s father receives (and mourns) in the film.
Enough Already, Tell Me Why It’s So Cheap
First, we should tell you that we based our assumption on the home’s current market value, meaning we didn’t include the price increase that would come along from being a somewhat famous home.
If you’re interested in moving into the Christmas Story Home, prepare to spend at least $53,000.
When we first saw this figure, we scratched our heads. Why so low? Cleveland, like many Rust Belt cities, has a struggling housing market. While the price might be low for some cities, this is average, even a bit low, for a home in Cleveland.
What you’d purchase with your hard-earned greenbacks is 1,792 square feet of living space in Cleveland’s Tremont area; the home includes four bedrooms and two baths.
Unwrapping the Cost
As with our other pieces, the Movoto team needed several pieces of information, prior to calculating our estimate. We needed to know two things:
- The house’s size and dimensions
- Comparable properties
The Spirit of Christmas smiled on us because both were easy to locate. The house’s size can be found on its website. As for the comparables, we scoured through local real estate listings until we found similar properties.
Now that you know how much the Christmas Story House costs, don’t be afraid to ask for it this holiday season. It’s safer than a Red Ryder BB Gun.
