Webaroo’s universal messaging platform, GupShup that boasts of supporting over 2.1 billion mobile interactions per month and is being used by 66 million users has decided to pivot again. According to NBW, social messaging hasn’t been working for the company and the team has decided to launch TeamChat, a mobile-only enterprise collaboration tool for the global audience.
The pivot would also mean an end to GupShup.
According to the company, Teamchat is available only on Android for now and enables messaging among teams of any size, by structuring the messages to reduce clutter. The enterprise app has the capability to enable integration with existing ERP, CRM, CSR, SFA and other enterprise systems.
Additionally, Teamchat has built Chatlets that are small applications that perform a specific task on messages within single chat thread. Chatlets could be also defined as smart bots/apps that perform the pre-defined tasks. Examples include polls, surveys, sales reports, registration forms, lookups and more. The app is free for now but my guess is that it won’t be for long with the market that it plans to serve.

With the possibility of integrating with enterprise systems, Teamchat could be interesting and might even give a big breakthrough to the team. The pivot is also according to trends since recently we have seen companies developing enterprise messaging apps, as the space for consumer messaging apps is getting crowded.
Communication is a hot domain but it is quite interesting to note that the messaging app GupShup didn’t work at a time when global messaging players are still entering the country. Mobile messaging space is still seeing a lot of action in the country.
Gupshup started in early 2005 in the pre-Facebook and Whatsapp days when SMS was the most important tool of communicating with friends on a larger scale. With a seed capital of $1 million, Gupshup became a mobile platform for users to create communities and groups on varying topics like finance, politics, entertainment, sports and many others.
By May 2005, the company had grown its user base to nearly 30,000 and in March 2006, the company received funding of $10 million from an umbrella group of investors. In 2008-09 the company stated that it posted revenue of Rs. 5 crore and by 2010 the revenue started to rise at a rate of 300-400%.
In August 2013, Gupshup added multi language support for its users with an availability of a user friendly regional keyboard. The company launched apps across all mobile operating systems and it was being thought of that the company would capitalise on “SoLoMo” i.e. Social, Local and Mobile.
With the latest pivot by the company, it looks like Gupshup wants to bid adieu to the B2C space and concentrate on the B2B or enterprise space. What is interesting to note here is that the company’s CEO Beerud Sheth while talking to ET last year had said that,
“Our next challenge is to broaden our base and provide a platform for buyers to meet customers directly, thereby integrating the B2C model. In terms of revenue, we are likely to cross the Rs 100 crore mark by the end of this fiscal year.”
It would be interesting to find out what led the pivot of Gupshup to Teamchat as an enterprise app when at one point the company had labelled itself as India’s largest mobile social messaging service.
