Mobile & Apps

The Japanese messaging app LINE has launched a new app to its exiting bunch of apps. According to Tech In Asia, LINE Corp., a unit of South Korea’s biggest Internet search provider NHN Corp has launched a Japanese news app – LINE News. The new app will be part of its existing apps such as – Line Camera app, Line Anti-Virus, Line Novel for e-books, Line Manga, etc.

The messaging app, which recently revealed that it may top 200 million users this month in overseas markets including Spain, has launched the news app on Android as well as iPhone. The news app is available only in Japanese language, is syndicating news from all major Japanese news sources. The content displayed is from politics to gossip to Formula one.

The launch has been a quite affair and could be great news to the local crowd from Japan itself. The app that boasts of 70% users from Japan itself is a clear indication why LINE Corp went for a news app in a mobile first world.

Tech companies building mobile apps for easy online consumption have been the focus for a number of companies. Facebook had shared some time back that it is also working in the same direction of creating a Flipboard like news reader. LinkedIn acquired Pulse, the popular newsreader for the web and mobile in the month of April, 2013 to have a bigger share in the market. Besides this there has been a rapid proliferation of news readers after the demise of Google Reader such as Feedly, Digg, etc. and there is Flipboard too .

At present the feature is open in Japanese language and is giving competition to players like Excite, Yahoo Japan, and Google News Japan. But what would interest me is, whether going further LINE decides to make the app available in other Asian countries and thereafter in different markets. It might create a spike in the user base of LINE messaging app.
