Finding your way to the top in today’s highly competitive digital world is no easy task. With career paths changing as rapidly as the technology that creates them and innovative startups, well, starting up literally every day, it’s impossible to even keep track of what the top looks like.
But on one point there’s no disagreement: there IS a top. And there’s no shortage of success stories for those who are brave enough to chart their own path to reach it.
What’s most interesting is how very different those career paths can be! Sometimes it’s a series of bold, risky moves that pan out. Other times it’s a pure stroke of luck.
That’s why Vitamin T worked with The Barbarian Group to chart a few interesting trips to the top for some of the digital industry’s best−startup folks, designers, global bosses, and social media journalists. The outcome of those interviews led to our Trip to the Top infographic, which chronicles the triumphs, tribulations, and turning points of each path to show their transformation from Peter Parker into an interactive superhero. Check them out:
- Anthony De Rosa – Social Media Editor, Reuters | “The undisputed King of Tumblr”
- Mari Sheibley – Lead Designer, foursquare
- Michael Karnjanaprakorn – CEO | Co-Founder of Skillshare
- Lauren Crampsie – Global CMO, Ogilvy & Mather
- Noah Brier – Founder | CEO, Percolate
What did we learn? Well, making it to the top is clearly not just about the school you attend (or don’t) or the connections you make (though those can certainly pay off). It’s not even about making your way to a global C-level role – though no one will argue that’s success! In fact, it could be about creating your own C-level role by making your passion your work.
One thing is for sure. It seems like passion for what you do and staying true to yourself can make your Trip to the Top worth every minute of the journey!
