HubSpot’s Culture Code Deck

In an article written by Dharmesh Shah, HubSpot’s Co-founder and CTO, Shah seeks to make a statement on why company culture is so important. Shah went so far as to create an infographic and SlideShare deck to further hone in on his points involving workplace happiness, collaboration, and work-life balance.

In the infographic, Shah makes the argument that culture is to recruiting as product is to marketing. Inversely stating that your culture is a product, and as customers are more easily attracted to a great product, amazing people are more easily attracted to a great culture.

In the Culture Code post, the company hits the high points of their deck. Particularly, they  address the difficult balance between their mission and their metrics. Their mission being to make the world inbound, and their metrics referring to continuing to supply data and information insight to clients. Other highlights include:

  • Culture is to recruiting as product is to marketing.

  • Whether you like it or not, you’re going to have a culture. Why not make it one you love?

  • Solve For The Customer — not just their happiness, but also their success.

  • Power is now gained by sharing knowledge, not hoarding it.

  • “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.”

  • You shouldn’t penalize the many for the mistakes of the few.

  • Results should matter more than when or where they are produced.

  • Influence should be independent of hierarchy.

  • Great people want direction on where they’re going — not directions on how to get there.

  • “Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.”

  • We’d rather be failing frequently than never trying.

It seems the times are changing, and according to Shah this is where the workplace is going, and should be headed. Shah sums it up best when he refers to life + work and not life vs. work. Shah knows people want to live and work with purpose, and this manifesto explains just that.
