What Google Plus Company Pages Are Teaching Us

The last 48 hours have seen a lot of opinions shared about Google+ Pages. Some good comments and some not so good. Expectations were high for this roll-out and some people may be disappointed.

Here is my take on some learning’s from Google+ Pages

Google+ Company Pages will get better.  No Social Media Platform is perfect. Facebook Company Pages, Linkedin Company Pages, Twitter Company Profile ID, FourSquare Company Page and the list goes on and on. Each one of these platforms is limiting for me. I would not want to generate my sole revenue from any of these sites.  Even though there are millions of consumers and companies on these platforms, your reach is very small with respect to reaching the masses.  I also think of Apple and their periodic updates. Each update brings new features, but in the end their updates may not include everything that people are looking for.

Google+ Company Pages is giving you hints and suggestions. I think when Google gives you suggestions like the new badge and to make sure you are sharing your links, you should listen and test out these features if you want to maximize your company’s visibility on Google Search.  Thankfully, we are being given some instructions and they are being given to everyone not just some select consultants. This really evens the playing field quite a bit.

Connect with people on a personal level first.   People connect with people at a much quicker pace than with brands. I saw a lot of new people jump on Google+ in the next few days who have never posted any new contact before and also put up a Google+ Company Page.  These platforms take time to connect.

Stay above the noise!  Over the next few days, you will hear good points and bad points. Be informed, but don’t make haste judgements  until you know the facts. I know a lot of people are mad that Google+ Company Pages are tied to a single Gmail id. That is the way it is right now. Is it a reason to quit Google+, not for me.  Listen, but don’t base any decisions yet.

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT – I also read some posts indicating that they are going to other platforms because their clients are there more. Statements like this one are often made by social media experts. They feel that they already know how this platform works and they have moved on for now.  A year from now, these same people will tell you that they have 1 year of experience. Keep track of these type of people who make comments like this and see for yourself.

Be proactive! Seek out your clients and companies on Google+.  Search for key terms and connect with people, see a recent post for more information.

Have fun this week as people discover Google+ and make sure you are actively developing new plans and strategies for using this platform.

  1. It is 50 odd years since I finished my academic education which did teach me how to learn and do basic analysis. In this time data technology has become millions of times more powerful, but the society I live in is about a million times more f**d up. Why on earth do we not use our capabilities to do things like accountability and identifying corruption and getting markets working so that they deliver resources where they are most needed not merely to where they will make the most profit. Why is there no way to identify specifically what Goldman Sachs has done that has been good for society, not merely good for their profit!
