Google Search+ Searching Your World

We’re going to start by defining again Google Search Plus Your World, just to refresh your memory. We’re going to talk about what a personal search is, versus a regular search, and Google Search Plus Your World – what the difference is, if you like, between that and a regular search.

We’re also going to touch on Google Search Plus Your World search engine result page. We’ll show you some embedded results to see how they differ from some of the more traditional search engine results pages.

And we’re going to talk about influencing what other Google Plus users see. In other words, how to get your content in front of them, into the regular search engine result pages, which of course is what we’re trying to do.

We’re also going to talk about some content dos and don’ts, ways to make the most of new content. We’re going to talk about why fresh content is so important. Why +1 to share your content is so important. And what effect all this has on followers, and also how more important followers are in the overall scheme of things.

We’ll touch briefly on how to brand company pages. We have actually got a separate video for that in detail. But we’re going to talk about that briefly here.

Search terms & your profile. Talking about how your profile can actually appear in search engine results. We’ll show you some examples of that.

And some more bad stuff about SPAMMING and why you don’t want to do it. And we’re really trying to enforce that. It’s not an approach that’s going to work with Google+.

This is something interesting that has come out of the lips of Google themselves. And this will help clarify what their goal is for Google Search Plus Your World is.

And what they’re saying is “you should be able to find your own stuff on the web, the people you know and things they’ve shared with you, as well as the people you don’t know but might want to…. all from one search box”. In other words they’re trying to integrate all those things into the traditional Google search box.

In the past of course you would only have had one of those. You wouldn’t have had much, if any of that personalization. And what they’re trying to do is bring in, and embed that Google+ network into the regular Google search. And again that’s why it’s so important to be using this stuff to get the most out of it.

Because again, most people, these days, the majority of Google searches in general, people using search engines, are using Google. So it’s very important to maximize this and make sure we’re getting as much as we can out of it.

There are three components that make up Google Search. The first one, which we alluded to, is personal results. This is Google’s way of customizing the search engine results, just for you.

So they’ll add things such as Google+ photos and posts – both your own – if you’ve actually shared/created content – but also those that have been shared specifically with you. In other words, in your Google+ news stream. And you’ll be able to see those embedded within the Google normal search pages. So what they’re trying to do is provide a new set of search engine results pages which combine the personal results with the other things we’re going to about shortly.

They also want to introduce profiles into search. Both in the Auto-complete, where something pops up quickly as you type, so you can see something before you’ve actually pressed Enter and started your search; and also after you’ve searched. And what they’re trying to do is immediately find people you’re close to, or might be interested in following, or are following, who are submitting content, or have got content on the topic that you’re searching about.

Number 3, people and pages. They’re trying to really help you find these people and profiles in Google+ pages relating to a specific topic or area of interest, and enable you to follow them with just a few clicks. So they are really trying to integrate Google+ with the regular Google search.

You’ll notice when you do a search now there’s an option to click on +1 for example, next to a Google search engine result. So if you like what you see you can click that. And that’s Google’s way of integrating Google+ into its regular search.

And you’ll find more and more over time that’s going to happen. As time ticks on they are going to be integrating Google+ more and more.

So collectively, put together those features combine to create the Google Search Plus Your World product.

Now let’s talk about personal search versus regular search.

Now in the past if you did all the right things, and you found all the right back links and so forth and you had the right content, you could get to page 1. Once you got to page 1 you were pretty well guaranteed to be number 1 for most Google services around the world. So if you were number 1 in Australia, most likely, if you weren’t in the local SEO market, in other words, you weren’t trying to rank for local search terms that were relevant to a particular area, just general search terms in other words, you would probably be ranking fairly high up in other search engines, such as the US one or the UK one.

That has changed with Google Search Plus Your World. Now you still have, depending on how much authority a web site has got, it is still possible that it will rank very well on page 1. But, with this personalization that has been introduced with Google Search Plus Your World, it’s now a different kettle of fish, to coin a phrase. It’s a little bit harder to get there now. Because you might find that traditionally if you had ten results on page one, and you were happy to get one listing on there – well, four or five might now be taken up with Google+ results. They’ll actually embed those and take priority over those other ones. SO if you weren’t in the first few search engine results you could be pushed right down and may not even appear on the first page.

This is why you need to be using Google+, to make sure that if that does happen the chances are still high that you are going to be shown as one of those personalization results. So you’re still going to get your content in front of people. People who don’t know this are going to just suddenly wonder why their traffic has gone down by an astronomic amount. This is why. Because of this personalization. And that is why we’re using Google+ for.

Very much it is still early days. You need to bear that in mind. In actual fact it was a little bit hard for me to do some testing because Google Search Plus Your World isn’t fully integrated in all countries. It is still actually at the time of producing this video not correctly setup in Australia. It is coming. So what I

had to do was actually use a proxy, to connect to the Google US search engine, so I could check the results over there. Because this personalization is still coming through.

Chances are in the next few weeks, to few months, it will be integrated fully around the world. Because it certainly is Google’s stance on this, that they are in the process of putting this in, worldwide.

So keep that in mind. It is early days, and sometimes flaky little funny things can happen as a result. And that’s because it is new, and being updated by Google.

Alright, time for the exciting thing now, and that’s some examples. I wanted to show you three genuine examples, Google Search Plus Your World examples in the search engine result pages, and what it looks like, to give you an idea.

I really want to show how different it looks to traditional search engine results pages, and how these personalization results are taking over the traditional search engine result pages.

First example, I made a post which consisted of a YouTube video which I shared. It wasn’t my own video. You’ll see whose it was on the next page. Four minutes later it appeared on the following pages image. And I will show you exactly what it looked like. This is an example of a profile match.

Now this is a first page result for a search term. The actual search term itself isn’t significant. It is not a particularly high traffic keyword. This is just an example. But this works equally well for higher traffic keyword as well. But this is just an example. One simple example. And the point I want to make is this the profile I used was a Google+ new account that I set up. I followed myself with another Google+ account. In other words I pretended that I was a subscriber that was following what I was typing, my main Tim Buchalka

profile. So I could actually see the result. And I made sure obviously, as I talked about earlier, I used a proxy and so forth and I was actually appearing in the US, just to see what it would look like from their perspective. And this is what it looked like.

And you can see there that there is a search term at the top of the page: ‘google does use social sites’. And you can see the first post there. There are a couple of posts there, but the point I want to make is, look at this already. These three posts are all posts I made. But over here is the magic part. This profile. Now this is a Matt Cutts video. As I said, I shared that. 4 minutes ago, literally, and this was on page 1 for that search term.

Now you can see there with the example I used, ‘google does use social sites’. Notice the bold part. Google does use social sites. So Google matched what I typed in the entry that I typed when I shared that post. You know the bit of text that I typed above the post that I shared. So there’s a classic example. You need to be putting your keywords in there when you’re sharing your content to make sure Google can index it with your keywords.

But look how cool this is. It’s got my name, profile, a link, I click on that link to Tim Buchalka and it goes to that profile. Plus, it has determined based on that keyword that all these posts are relevant for that keyword. And these have been added by the personalization of Google+. So that’s just given you one example of how powerful Google+ is at taking over those search engine result pages for the people that are following you.

Example 2. The next one. These are older posts that I have shared on Google+. The user searches for a term, web traffic, which in this case is quite a high profile term. And it gets content that I have shared. And yes, we are beating Wikipedia for this term!

And the other point I want to make here is that on this next page, the first result, is actually a test username I set up as well.

Here’s an example. You can see here: Tim Buchalka shared this. Again, this is not my account. This is someone else’s Google+ account who has followed the Google+ for Tim Buchalka, and they are seeing my picture in there. Because I have shared this on Google+, and because they are following me, they have added me to their circles, they are seeing that I have actually shared this.

And you can see there it has also added some other personlization results as well. There’s another site. These are both sites that Anthony and I own. And you can see they’re showing up there.

The other thing was, this one here, this Timothy Armstrong. This was another user I set up as a test, and for that test I shared this site Alexa. Again you can see here that Timothy Armstrong shared this on Google+. So again you’re getting another example of your name getting up there and being merged with the traditional search engine results, which gives you another avenue.

Which is pretty fantastic!

OK, moving on to the third example. This is a very generic article I put up 24 hours earlier. Let’s see what it comes out like. Again, very generic, over optimization SEO penalty. “Google introduces” as you can see there is a very generic keyword! And again I have got a similar example there, the fact that I’ve shared that as well.

So you’re starting to see the power of this. This is why you really need to be using Google+ today.

And these results don’t even take into account the Google Authorship program. Remember, we talked about that before. That’s where you sesetup your

authorship, and you use the tags and so forth to connect to your content, so Google knows you’re an author. That’s over and above this. Google Search Plus Your World is not necessarily related to that. So once you add that as well, you’ll get another set of links and so forth. And another avenue, if you will, to get traffic, which is fantastic.

So if you’re not already using this you need to start taking it to the next level and start implementing it. But if you are using it it’s time to really put it into overdrive.

OK. Now that I have shown you some of our results, the next question on your mind is probably how to influence what other people see in their search engine results.

Well it’s not actually that hard.

Here is a list of the five major things.

  • Put keywords in your posts. We talked about that.
  • Make sure your content is great.
  • Because: Shares and +1′s matter.

The better your content is, when your followers see that, they will want to comment on it, share it, click on +1. The more engagement you get, the greater the likelihood that you’re going to be able to get those results in front of people and they’re going to stick for longer periods of time in their Google personalization searches.

* You need to be posting often

And look, don’t just post your own stuff. You really want to be seen as a giving person on Google+. Make it a good mix of your own stuff, but also other people’s content, as you saw I shared on that Matt Cutt video. And look that can still work well for you. It can still be quite relevant. Because obviously when I shared that Matt Cutt video, as an example, that was relating to the topic, the niche that I was in, which of course, was Internet Marketing.

Responsibility time: with this power comes great responsibility. So you do need to make that content good. The more you get your content “shared” with other people in your circles the better the results are going to “stick”. So you really need to focus on that content and give people a reason firstly to follow you in the first place, but when they are following you, to engage with that content, to click on those +1′s, to actually comment on your stuff, and then to share it. So your responsibility is to make sure people are doing that.

The other thing is fresh content matters.

Google+ Profiles isn’t just a matter of setting it and putting a couple of articles and then leaving it. In actual fact Google+ profiles with no posts in the last 72 hours don’t show up in those related people / pages section of Google’s search results.

That’s the second example where I showed you my profile was up on the right hand side.

You won’t get that unless you’re posting on a regular basis. You do need to keep pumping out the content. But, don’t spam. And we’ll talk more about spam shortly.

But just to confirm:

  • +1′s matter. The more you get on posts the better.
  • The more follows that reach you makes a big difference. In other words literally the more people following you is going to make a difference to how good those results are and how long they stick for.
  • In general brand pages are probably better than profiles. Google seems to be giving priority to that. And again we’ll be talking about brand pages more in a separate video. But it still applies to Google Plus Search Your World. So just keep that in the back of your mind for now, that you’re going to get those results with profiles, but even better when you start using brand pages. Brand pages can also be used for products and companies and so forth. They are very flexible. Probably as Internet Marketers a lot of people will be using those product type pages. But we will be talking about that, as I said, in a separate video. But anyway, keep that in mind that that’s going to help you rank even better, when it comes time to be looking at that.

In terms of your profile. We have talked about this before, and I just want to touch on it again. Your major search terms should appear in one of these sections of your profile: Introduction, Employment, Education or Places. Put your big keywords in that profile. And look, you can use more than one keyword. Don’t get into keyword stuffing or anything like that. But, by the same token, flesh it out a little bit.

The profile that I have showed you in previous videos wasn’t particularly long but there’s no reason you can’t type in a lot of information and have quite a few keywords, as long as there as a good mix of content in your profile, and it’s not just keywords basically.

Spamming.

Don’t do it! Definitely don’t do it.

It’s crazy to do it. And did we say, don’t do it? Don’t do it!

It’s not worth it. The reason it’s not worth it, well, there’s lots of reasons.

Firstly your account can and will get deleted, eventually. Especially now that Google have introduced the blocking capability. And don’t think for a minute that Google won’t look at the blocking. If more than one person starts blocking your content, for whatever reason, Google is going to start looking very unfavorably on that, and I would suggest they would probably delete your profile.

So that’s why you need to make sure the content is good. Just copy/pasting stuff, or being seen as a keen person who’s just trying to promote stuff, sell stuff, people will start blocking you, and you will basically get banned out of Google and your account will be deleted.

And that’s not what you want to do.

So you need to spend the time to create content. We talked about that in another video. We talked about where you could actually choose the type of persona if you will that you’re going to be doing on Google+. You know, whether you were going to be the type of person that shared a lot of information. But even if you’re sharing a lot of information you should be adding text above the part you’re actually sharing. So you’re giving your followers a bit of a summary of what they’re going to get if they read the information you’re sharing, or watch the video, or read the image or whatever it is. So you’re still in effect creating new content. And that’s important. That is what differentiates you

from a spammer. And you’re creating good quality content. And that’s the name of the game.

OK, so that’s basically a summary of what we talked about today. We talked about the Google Search Plus Your World, and how you can start using it. Hopefully you can see the advantages and how you are going to be able to crush the competition if you start implementing some of this.
