Easy Ways To Prep Your Skin For Summer image skin 1

When springtime hits, it’s out with the old and in with the new! We toss leftover holiday decorations, get rid of clothes we’ve outgrown, and even clean out the garage – all to create a fresh environment in our homes.

With all of that cleaning, it can be easy to lose track of taking care of yourself, not to mention your skin! It’s time to get your body ready for shorts, sandals, and swimwear! Before you know it, summer will be here. The time to prepare is now.  Here’s how:

Step 1:  OUT WITH THE OLD

The first step is probably the most over-looked step in body care – exfoliation. Our skin is in a constant state of renewal. New cells form, while older cells slowly work their way to the surface. These dead skin cells create a dull, lifeless appearance. Exfoliating will accelerate the renewal process – revealing younger, healthier, more supple looking skin.

  1. Soak in a nice hot tub for a few moments. Yes, this sounds more like an escape filled with pampering. Well, while you certainly deserve it , it’s more than that…it’s essential for healthy skin.
  2.  Find your favorite almond, walnut, sugar or salt exfoliator – or better yet, make your own by combining a cup of sugar or salt with a cup of cooking oil. Massage over your your entire body, including your arms, legs, elbows, hands and feet.
  3. Rinse well, but leave a small amount of oil on your skin to seal in moisture.

Keep in mind that these types of exfoliators are a bit more aggressive, so you would only want to use them once a week. For a gentle, daily type of exfoliation, use a loofah when bathing. As part of your spring cleaning, replace any of your old bathing sponges or loofahs. They’re prime real estate for bacteria and mold. Look for sponges and loofahs that have a rope, so they can hang, and dry out after each use.

One of my favorite tricks is to apply your favorite body lotion or body gel as you get out of the bath or shower. If you quickly towel dry, applying the product while your body is still damp will help seal in additional moisture.

Step 2: BE SANDAL READY

Relax and soak your feet in warm water for a few minutes. When you exfoliate your feet, paying special attention to your heels and toes.

Another one of my favorite tricks is to massage your feet with a heavy cream, and then put on a pair of socks before hitting the hay.

Step 3: MIX IT UP

As the seasons change, your body is exposed to a different climate, one with more humidity and sunlight. Review your current body care regimen. Try a lighter type of body lotion or even a body gel that absorbs quickly. You can even find body moisturizers that leave a natural looking sheen, keeping your legs looking their best in those summer outfits.

If you want a healthy looking tan, avoid the tanning bed. Try a self-tanner for a natural looking glow. Here’s another trick – avoid dark self-tanners. If you miss a spot, it will stand out like a sore thumb. Instead, apply a lighter version, allowing time for it to take effect. Use again each day until you achieve the level tan you are looking for.

With a little time and effort, you will see fresh, healthier looking skin in no time!
