A/B tests or split tests help you determine which of two alternatives work better. Bloggers must make various decisions about placement of different web page elements while designing their blog. Although these may seem trivial, your placement of the call to action or the color of your signup button can be a factor in obtaining a new lead.
The A/B testing method has been proven to help business owners increase conversion rates and define winning product or service offers. Facebook is almost continuously performing A/B tests with its phased roll out of different features in different markets.
1. Landing Page Design
Should your Home page or the main landing page be blog style or will it be better to create a static Home page with a separate blog? This is the first decision most bloggers encounter as they begin designing their blog. You can gather data for these options and check what has worked well for others.

Remember, your blog’s audience is unique and gathering data for your audience will help you make a decision based on specific information that is relevant to your blog’s audience.
2. Signup Widget
Building a long subscriber list is every blogger’s dream. It is not only assured traffic, but also followers you can reach out to get feedback. These are also potential clients that are already in your sales funnel. But getting people to signup is a difficult task.
You can’t just put a signup widget somewhere in the sidebar or footer and forget about it. People tend to ignore many of these locations and may not be even aware that you maintain a newsletter. The placement of your signup form has to be perfect to get people to sign up.
Then there is also the text that you put on your signup widget. And how much information do you ask for during signup? Does it really matter what color you use? These are all valid questions.
You can guess the answers or you can split test.
3. Navigation Placement
Right-hand sidebar has become a common feature across blogs of all sizes irrespective of the industry and genre. Top navigation elements are the most important location for most blogs. Once the preferred location, the left-hand navigation is now completely phased out and you rarely see anyone use that.
Left hand navigation works better for certain businesses. You won’t know if that is the case with your blog unless you try it out.
4. Call To Action
It could be just the one thing that makes all the difference. A slight change in your text – Unbounce found that changing ‘Your’ to ‘My’ in ‘Start your free 30 day trial’ improved their conversion rate 90 percent!
Now you don’t want to miss this chance of possibly getting a 90 percent bump in your sales or signups because you just don’t want to take the trouble of A/B testing. Your choice of button color and font color can also make a considerable difference in your conversion rates.
5. Social Share Buttons
No blog can reach its full potential without encouraging the users to share content across social networks. But where do you place those all important social sharing buttons in the post. Before the content? After the content? Floating vertically? On the right side or the left? Ahh. So many questions and no definite answers.
The only way out of this is – you guessed it right – A/B testing. Many WordPress plugins like Buffer and Social Flares offer optional placement. Changing the placement of the bar happens at the click of a button. So why not try it?

A/B testing takes time and a lot of work to define a correct hypothesis to get relevant results. You also need to determine what would be the right sample size for your tests.
Evaluating the different free and paid tools and setting up all this is hard work. But the gain might just be worth all this effort and you might discover that a simple change can make a profound difference and help you achieve your goals.
