In the film “Horrible Bosses,” any resemblance to real or living people may have been purely coincidental, but for many American workers, the portrayal represents a familiar daily reality in the workplace: their bosses are making them miserable. And sick. The Journal of Business and Psychology reported that workers’ health can be adversely affected by a negative psychological climate, which can lead to a slew of health-related problems, including heart disease and depression.

Adding insult to injury is the fact that CEOs make 380 times more than the average worker. The average compensation for a CEO rose almost 727 percent between the years 1978 and 2011—more than twice the increase in S&P’s 500-stock index—while pay for the average nonsupervisory worker in the private sector rose less than 6 percent during that same period. While employees generally accept that their boss is going to earn more than they do , they rest assured that with the additional money probably come a proportionate amount of stress and anxiety. As Robert Frost wryly noted, “By working faithfully eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day.” On the contrary, however, research indicates that those in high leadership positions actually experience less stress than those in non-leadership positions.

So are bosses worth it? A new study suggests that they can make a significant impact on company productivity and through a seemingly simple act: they teach their employees useful skills. Their employees may not be particularly motivated by bosses, but they are learning from them—at least from the good ones. This infographic examines the impact of management on workers and how much bosses may actually be worth.

Collisions between vehicles and animals have become common occurrences in some parts of the United States. Roads and highways that cut through animal migration paths, known as wildlife corridors, result in a unique combination of high animal and vehicle traffic. The consequences are unavoidable. Human life and wildlife is impacted, often fatally.

The physical, financial and emotional wreckage is immense. Every year, the United States spends billions in medical, road-repair and vehicle costs due to these collisions, not to mention the trauma of all of the human and animal lives that are lost. But is anything being done about this problem?

Wildlife corridor technicians blend their knowledge of ecology and engineering to help develop and maintain both manmade and natural wildlife corridors. When roads intersect with these migration corridors, these environmental stewards track animal movement and assess the optimal location to construct passages that let creatures move safely across roadways and into other natural habitats.

The professionals use their expertise to help shrink the number of animal-vehicle collisions (AVCs) and the resulting horrific consequences. This infographic gives some background on the emergent problem of AVCs and presents solutions based on the work of these technicians.

Law school has taken a beating in the press lately, with unemployed graduates mired in debt making plenty of headlines. But does that mean law school isn’t worth it? It’s not quite that simple.

It’s true that graduates probably won’t waltz out of school and into a six-figure salary anymore. Demand for lawyers is slowing, as tighter government budgets and cost-conscious businesses are cutting back on legal services and relying on more cost-effective paralegals or finance professionals to provide services lawyers used to handle, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But even in tough job markets, lawyers are still needed. They’re just working in different places. As big business specialties – including tax law and litigation – are slowing down, there is growing attention to issues such as health reform or elder law. This has led to increases in the number of lawyers certified in those specialties, according to data from the American Bar Association.

Fewer recent grads are going to work in large, private firms, but the number of entrepreneurial- minded lawyers hanging out a shingle has been climbing, more than doubling from 2.8 percent in 2007 to 6 percent in 2011, according to NALP, the Association for Legal Career Professionals.

Additionally, with fewer individuals applying to law school, institutions are starting to compete for applicants with solid GPAs and LSAT scores. Increased scholarship funds may give applicants more bargaining power, flipping the tables on the usual scenario of students paying full freight for a law degree.

Still wondering if law school is worth the investment? Learn more about the changing landscape of law school in the infographic below.

Millions of U.S. women own businesses, and these firms show faster-than-average growth for jobs and revenue in seven of 13 major industries, including health care and social assistance. The health care and social services industry boasts both the biggest number and the highest concentration of women-led companies. This sector also shows the second-fastest growth in women-owned firms.

Many women go into health services because they have “work experience” in this area, serving as virtual chief health & wellness officers for their household. Also, women may serve as caregivers for the elderly or disabled. Women can lead in this industry as they make daily health-related decisions and experience diverse aspects of health care delivery.

You may not have noticed these women-owned businesses in health care because they tend to be startups and smaller firms. Women may become their own bosses partly in search of life-work balance: Big companies typically show less flexibility in scheduling, and traditional hiring practices shun gaps in employment history. For women with ambitions to start their own health tech startup, inspiration abounds; let’s take a look at some challenges, successes and role models for female entrepreneurs in health services.

The influence of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media giants has spread across modern society faster than the Black Death swept across 14th century Europe. Speaking of pandemics, how does healthcare fit into the world of social media? Welcome to social health.

Social health is the mash-up of social media and healthcare, and it’s starting to gain traction. In fact, a third of all consumers use social media for matters regarding their health. Thanks to social networking sites and the increased availability of broadband and mobile technology, people are forming online patient support groups, becoming better educated on medical topics and diagnoses, and sharing doctor and product reviews – wherever and whenever they want.

However, people still tend to trust their doctors over peers and family when it comes to getting accurate medical advice, giving providers a great opportunity to jump into the social-health fray. And many have. In a 2012 study by the, 24 percent of doctors said they used social media at least once a day to look for medical information while almost two-thirds think social media enhances their ability to care for their patients.

There are many benefits for providers who take part in social health as well, such as giving doctors a way to connect with consumers in between visits and allowing healthcare organizations to receive immediate feedback on products and services.

Concerns about privacy and security have surfaced alongside the rising popularity of social health. Consumers are worried that their medical information will go public while insurers and providers must try to protect patient privacy and act within the bounds of HIPAA and the FDA as they participate in the online social sphere.

This is just a peek into the vast realm of social health. Check out the infographic below for even more valuable insights about this incredible new online movement.

From the mail-order correspondence courses of the last century to today’s high-tech learning environment, distance learning has changed the way some college students learn and earn degrees. Online education continues to make strides in educating new generations of students, as witnessed by the double-digit growth of people taking at least one class online in the past several years.

According to a collaborative study by the Babson Survey Research Group and the College Board, while less than 10 percent of college students were taking at least one class online in 2003, nearly one-third of college students are now taking at least one of their courses online. While students come from a variety of ages and ethnicities, they do seem to have some things in common, particularly when it comes to their gender and household income. They also have similarities when considering motivations for taking online rather than on-campus classes.

Have you ever taken an online class, or would you take one? And just who are the nearly one-third of higher education students who are taking at least one online class? Do you fit the online college student profile?

Wedding planners help walk couples through the biggest day of their lives. From the time a bride says “yes” to a groom’s wedding proposal until after the last bottle of champagne is popped, a good wedding planner will work tirelessly to ensure the big day is a total success. That could include everything from arranging wedding photography and food to scrutinizing fabric swatches and finding a last minute solution for a lost earring or missing best man.

While some married couples pop into the local justice of the peace or head to Las Vegas for a quickie wedding, there are plenty of brides and grooms who pull out all the stops to ensure their wedding day is a day they—and their guests—will never forget. And they’re spending money to make it happen. According to a survey by TheKnot.com and Wedding Channel.com, the average wedding budget in 2011 was $27,021.

Wedding planners must expect the best but be prepared for the worst. Most likely things will go smoothly during a couple’s big day, but during those times when they don’t, wedding planners are kind of like triage surgeons and airline pilots rolled into one. They are there to ensure a smooth ride but when things go off course, they need to be able to assess and fix any unplanned situations that arise. Of course they aren’t engaged in a life-or-death struggle, but try telling that to an anxious bride.

Learn more about what it takes to become a wedding planner in our infographic.

It’s no small feat to organize, manage, and assume the risks and responsibility of a business; do you have the education and background that could help you to succeed?

For those of you who relish the thought of breaking out of your comfort zone and making success truly your own, the question is – how are you going to get started?

According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, psychology is one of the most common majors for undergraduates in the U.S, with nearly 100,000 bachelor’s degrees awarded each year.

Psychology is a broad liberal arts field that covers subject matter ranging from biology to the humanities. Specializations in the field range from counseling to forensics to industrial organization. What these diverse niches have in common is a commitment to a scientific mode of inquiry that emphasizes observation, experimentation and analysis. Psychology majors can apply these skills to a wide range of careers in both the public and private sectors.

While just under half of students who complete a bachelor’s degree in psychology go on to graduate school, potentially training to work as a licensed counselor or psychologist, others go on to find work in diverse industries from sales to education. Learn more about the field of psychology, as well as related career paths, in our infographic below.

The world is going E, and so is college learning. From tablets such as the iPad to a widening expanse of electronic books available for purchase (and sometimes even for rent), the digital world is now a substantive part of the learning experience. And students say there should be more of it.

In a spring 2012 survey, two-thirds of students said they would like technology to play a greater role in their learning, including a greater use of netbooks, notebooks and tablets and an increased use of digital content. Even teachers say they want to integrate more digital content and more digital equipment into their classroom.

And these do not appear to be just wants. Students appear to be spending more of their discretionary money on technological devices. A recent study in the spring of 2012 showed that surveyed students planned to spend 227% more on technology in the 2012-13 school year than they did the year before.

Another 2012 study shows that college-age students use at least three technological devices daily and that most students don’t go more than an hour without using at least one of those devices. What gives? Turns out that students are interested in saving time. In fact, 90% of those surveyed students said that technological devices, including electronic textbooks, eReaders, mobile devices and tablets, help them to crunch time when it comes to studying.

What are the newest digital trends in learning and how are they helpful to students? Be sure to check out our infographic below to see what types of technology, from iPads to electronic textbooks, are being embraced and what the increased emphasis on digital learning could mean for the future.

Up late studying? Use your phone to find the nearest double espresso and maybe even pay for it. Location-based services make life easy, but what’s the tradeoff? Software on phones across the U.S. is tracking user actions. Smartphone apps share user information with marketers to help their partners create targeted advertising. Still, that hasn’t stopped the advance of location-based services, with smartphone owners most of all.

Location-based apps can be especially useful for college — they help students explore their campus and meet and make friends. LBS apps also build a marketplace where they can sell, buy or barter everything from bikes to tickets to tutoring.

But location-based apps aren’t just for students — administrators can use them to beef up campus tours, events for new students and alumni gatherings. These apps can help to encourage attendance, participation, school spirit and social networking. For example, at Webster University, more than half of incoming students participated in a SCVNGR game during orientation. For colleges, location-based apps get high marks.

With over 10 million users, Pinterest has rocketed to pop-culture fame since its launch in beta in March 2010. This rapid growth makes it the fastest growing social media site of the past year. If you’re familiar with Pinterest, it’s easy to understand why. The system of “curating” all things found on the Internet is easy to use, free, and frankly, addicting. It’s a whole new way to collect and organize all those appealing, intriguing and interesting images and ideas you come across on the Internet every day. What’s more, you can share your boards with other Pinterest users.

People from all walks of life are finding new and exciting ways to use Pinterest. While a bride-to-be might curate boards based on flowers, attire, food and more for her big day, travel aficionados can create boards based on their dream destinations. Educators have caught on to Pinterest in a big way. From kindergarten to college, teachers, professors and students are using Pinterest creatively to organize and share ideas from all around the Web and even in their own classrooms and campuses.

Not sure what Pinterest is and how it works? Learn more about Pinterest and see how and why educators and educational institutions are using Pinterest inside and outside of the classroom.

Who hasn’t used an interactive website, app or other computerized tracking system and ended up totally frustrated? Ah, but then there are those magical moments when you find using a system not only effortless but enjoyable. You might have a user experience designer to thank for that.

User experience design (UXD) is a career buzzword these days—you may have even heard about it in the news. It’s a career where workers are required to have tech knowledge along with a deep understanding of what makes people tick.

Sure, UX designers should know how to use high-tech design tools and have the ability to take an idea from white-board concept to product, but “soft skills” such as empathy are also important in this profession.

While designing items for human use is hardly a new idea, the increased use of personalized technology, has brought user experience design to the forefront. Don Norman coined the phrase “user experience design” while he was vice president of the advanced technology group at Apple in the mid 1990s. Because this career places a progressive emphasis in system design and development, people come to this career in a variety of modes. One thing seems clear, however: Those interested in pursuing this career should have a solid mix of education, experience and skills.

Learn more about launching a career in user experience design from the infographic below.

A bumper crop of corporate and peer-to-peer sharing services have overwhelmed the Internet in the past year, with companies such as Zipcar and Airbnb out to prove that sharing is better than owning. In addition to sharing big-ticket items such as cars or vacation rentals, niche sharing sites allow you to do things like find a home for your dog during vacations using DogVacay or connect with local tour guides on Vayable.

San Francisco, the nation’s unofficial Share Capital, is home to many of these new companies, but even in the friendly Bay area, sharing services have faced regulatory hurdles and calls for taxation. Take a look at how much sharing can save you—and where it might cost you—in the infographic below.

The global financial collapse slowed the sales within the prestige beauty industry—products (skincare, makeup and fragrance) sold mainly in US department stores, declining by 6% in 2009. Yet, over the past three years, the industry has found its footing, producing 4% growth in the US in 2011 and 11% in 2011.

The industry remarkably continues to grow in light of shaky consumer confidence and far out performed mass segment sales growth. Spurred by expansion and growth in global markets (France, +3%); (China, +22%); (Mexico, +15%); (UK, +9), emergence of the skin care segment (+14% growth in 2011), in particular anti-aging products (+17% growth in 2011), and several major brand acquisitions, 2011 marked was a high point for the industry.

Driven by technological advances, increased advertising spend, increased discretionary spending and wider product distribution channels, sales of prestige beauty products continues to increase in 2012 to-date. Companies continue to expand their global and domestic footprint through acquisitions and the introduction of new products.

Should college-age students be given more attention by Presidential candidates or are their votes already locked away? Research from UCLA in 2011 showed that 27.6% of surveyed incoming freshmen described themselves as liberal, 20.7% described themselves as conservative, and a full 47.4% identified themselves as ‘middle of the road.’

Does this matter? Yes, because many of the registered college voters intend to go to the polls this fall. How many? A spring 2012 Harvard University Institute of Politics study showed that 74% of four-year college students are registered to vote. Fifty-three percent of polled students said they intend to vote while 21% said they “probably” would. Extrapolate that outward to the 21.6 million students estimated to be attending U.S. colleges and universities in the fall of 2012 and you have numbers in the millions.

Yet, while the UCLA study showed that many incoming freshmen identified themselves as middle-of-the-road, other research shows that many college students do have left-leaning beliefs that may become stronger as they complete college. Their larger age bloc, the Millennials, may also hold more of these liberal beliefs. In fact, Millennials, or those born between 1981 and 2000, are more likely to be more Democratic or Democratic leaning than any of the other generational groups, including Gen X, the Baby Boomers and the Silent Generation.

You might watch them drool on themselves and play with their Cheerios and wonder what in the world is going on inside the brain of a baby. But in fact, there is probably a lot more going on in there than you might initially think. The first few years of life are critical developmental years for children as the baby’s brain doubles in size in the first year of its life and studies have shown babies are capable of picking up on basic physics and even basic human emotions.

But don’t make the mistake that, as parents, you can’t do anything to foster your baby’s intellectual development. While obviously some babies get their smarts from their parents, the parents can help foster that growth by staying aware of the baby’s environment, how much time it spends in front of a video screen, and how often you are interacting and stimulating him/her. Want to know if your baby is going to be a genius? Trying to figure out how to avoid hurting the baby’s brain development? Learn more about baby intelligence.

From OMG to LOL, there’s no denying that texting has changed the way we communicate with each other. Look no further than the fact that you don’t need clarification of what OMG or LOL means as proof that our written communication is evolving.

Though acronyms aren’t a new part of our language (the military has used them for years), the way we are using them in daily conversation with each other is a relatively new phenomenon. It’s safe to say that a new language has been born: text talk. This language is so widely used that it’s now infiltrating everyday life. The acronyms common in SMS texting are used via mobile devices and on Facebook and social media sites in order to disseminate an idea in an abbreviated form. Many “words” in this abbreviated language have even made it into the formidable Oxford English Dictionary. It makes perfect sense that a text language would have evolved. After all, who wants to type “You made me laugh just now with your witty comment” on a tiny keyboard when “LOL” or even “ROTFLOL” gets the point across just as well…if not even better.

Now that text talk is widely accepted as a legitimate form of communication, we are left wondering: Will text talk become our main form of communication in the future? Will the widespread use of text talk negatively impact the way we communicate? Or are we engaged in the creation of a colorful new language every time we text?

If you’re starting college this fall, you could become a proud member of the class of 2016. Your college years can offer plenty of timeless memories, from football games to all nighters, but one thing that’s not classic about college these days is the technology. If you’re entering college in 2012, you’re pursuing a degree in an increasingly tech-saturated college environment.

Technology in higher education has exploded during your lifetime. When you started kindergarten, iPads didn’t exist and college students wrote papers without Wikipedia. Today, college students may be logging onto a class website to access course videos, downloading a lecture from iTunes U or participating in a class discussion via Twitter.

The rise of technology in higher education has transformed more than just where students learn. It’s also shaped the way students gather information and evaluate knowledge. Free, online resources such as videos from the Khan Academy enable students to go outside the classroom to learn and explore new topics with peers. Likewise, though Wikipedia’s crowd-sourced nature can make it a questionable research tool, some professors have embraced it in the classroom to teach students about the dynamic and collaborative nature of online media.

Technology is not the only thing that’s changed a lot since you were born. You’ve witnessed the rise of Pottermania and the Olympic dominance of Michael Phelps. Your next four years can help you make big decisions about your college major, your life goals and your career path. Take a look at your class of 2016 timeline to see what else has happened to make your journey unique and imagine what the future could have in store.

More people reportedly have access to mobile phones than to clean water, according to the nonprofit Tides Center that runs openmhealth.org. Assuming this is true, the implications of “mHealth” — the electronic management of health care through mobile devices — could be far reaching. Wondering what mHealth is exactly? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines it as “the use of mobile and wireless devices to improve health outcomes, healthcare services, and health research.”

Sound unlikely? Not really. Chances are you already manage some aspect of your care using mHealth. If you’ve ever downloaded an app like “Calorie Counter” to see how many carbohydrates those daily peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches account for or if you’ve ever been online to see if it’s OK to yank out your daughter’s loose front tooth, then you’ve discovered what it is that comprises mHealth.

While mHealth provides a promise of health hope, it currently stands as a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Consider that there are some 40,000 mobile apps downloadable for use. Which is best? Which is reliable? Are any of the services substantiated as helpful? Well, in fact, the FDA has become involved and requires that any medical app company making a health claim seek FDA approval. This, however, is where things become complex. FDA approval takes substantial time and money and both of these could act as stopping points in new development.

Gaming, wikis, blogs, social media, interactive polls and QR codes: just some of the technologies that teachers are bringing into the classroom. The dizzying pace of tech evolutions offers some challenges as teachers and administrators race to keep up with the latest tools. The research discussed here shows the payoff for schools that become “friends” with educational gaming.

Experiments show how technology supports learning, with the potential to increase student engagement and motivation. Games target all kinds of subjects and age groups, with different types of gaming from strategy to simulations to hard-core curriculum topics. Teachers can access an arsenal of tools, from game consoles to laptops to smartphones.

Still, the U.S. government reports a lack of nationwide studies on the use of tech tools and gaming in education. Innovations come out so fast that there’s little time to do research on using gizmos like iPads in school. For parents and teachers who have concerns about gaming in classroom, here are some success stories.

Smartphones are becoming an integral part of our lives, and not just for their capacity to make phone calls. Our smartphones have become our music players, our GPS systems, our photography studios, our link to breaking news, the way we entertain ourselves—truly they have become extensions of ourselves. Some might even say our smartphones define us, telling the world more about us than we even realize.

You probably have your own opinions about the different types of people who own an iPhone as opposed to a Samsung Galaxy or a BlackBerry. And what do you really think about someone when they pull out a flip phone? One revealing study found that over half of iPhone users tend to be optimistic about the future. On the other hand, the same study found that BlackBerry owners may not be quite so prone to such optimism. Does this match with your own notions? Are iPhone users laid back trend followers and BlackBerry owners driven, type-A personalities?

More importantly, where do you fall into the smartphone personality spectrum? Does your smartphone define you? If so, what is it saying about you?
