The Fri-Up: Predicting the Oscars.

It’s that time again, the first light in the dimness of January. Tinseltown turns its lights on as the Oscar nominations are revealed. We’ve been tracking them in Brandwatch for several years but we’ve never yet looked at the rise of the nominations before the announcement.

This time, we take a look at the groundswell for the awards through Brandwatch in the month running up to the nominations. Also we look at whether or not Brandwatch could have predicted the nominees based on public opinion. This is just the beginning and we will, of course, continue to track the Oscars and red carpet hopefuls in the run up to the ceremony on February 24th.

Fig 1. History graph of mentions relating to Academy Awards/Oscars from 01/11/12 – 10/01/13.

Unsurprisingly, there is some early discussion, but nothing notable until December 3rd when an award shortlist unveiled 15 films in the running for the best documentary feature award. The next time there is any significant chat is the announcement of the nominations yesterday (January 10th).

Fig 2. Page type by hour for the 24 hours before and after the nominations announcement.

As we head in closer to the nominations announcement, looking at page type hour by hour, we see that dedicated forums lead the way in speculation. As soon as the nominations are revealed, Twitter buzz leads, followed by news. A tip for the gamblers amongst you – head to the forums for early indications from those in the know.

Finally we take a look at how savvy social media users are at predicting the nominees.

Fig 3. Top ten films based on discussion across social media.

The graph above shows which films were most frequently predicted to be nominated by social media users. When compared with the shortlist, Brandwatch predicts pretty well.

Conclusion: A-listers – take a look at our stats before rehearsing your incredulous winning vs graceful losing pose for the cameras. Here are a few unprepared losers who clearly didn’t check Brandwatch.

Your weekly round-up of the hottest stories worldwide, served with a slice of topical social media analysis and a dollop of Friday fun

Merry Christmas from Brandwatch

Since today is the Brandwatch Christmas party and the Brandwatch staff are adorned in Christmas jumpers, we felt that a gratuitous shot of Boo the Brandwatch dog in hers was in order, to help us on our merry way with the celebrations.

The Sizzle:

US, UK and Canada refuse to sign UN internet treaty

Brandwatch interview with Single Edition Media (VIDEO)

The Fri-Up: Top Christmas Tablets.
Until a few years ago, the phrase “Christmas tablets” had little meaning other than the obligatory Boxing Day Alka Seltzer hangover cure. Now, they are big business. When one of our favourite tech blog sites, The Register, revealed Christmas’ best tablets we thought we’d also take the temperature via Brandwatch. By checking out volume and sentiment of the top tablets, we see which are the hottest new pieces of kit and which tablets have been left out in the cold this Christmas.

It has also proved a helpful exercise for those of you slacking on the Christmas Shopping front.

Fig 1. Mention volume for top tablets from 14th October to 14th December 2012

The volume graph of The Register’s top tablets shows the Google Nexus 10 firmly in the lead as the most talked about tablet.

Let’s move on to sentiment to get a gauge on which tablet you should be buying according to customer satisfaction.

Fig 2. Sentiment scores for top tablets

In the sentiment stakes, the bottom of the leaderboard is fairly close with the Google Nexus 7 and Microsoft Surface coming in joint fifth place. The winner: Barnes & Noble’s Nook HD, still without any sign of the iPad in the top three.

So there you have it, last minute Christmas shopping sorted, courtesy of Brandwatch.

The Fri-Up: Royal Heir.

Kate Middleton’s first year and a half as a fully blown royal has been exhausting.. for all of us. The last 6 months have been particularly intense culminating in the early revelation of a highly anticipated new royal heir (following swiftly on the heels of new royal hair).

Fortunately at Brandwatch, we have the facility to condense these moments, somewhat like a celebrity big brother’s “Kate’s Best Bits’, in the form of a history graph below.

Looking back at the Brandwatch wordcloud from July 2011, we see that the discussion centred around very specific cases rather than questioning the freedom of the UK press as a whole.

Fig 1. History Graph for Kate Middleton Jun-Dec 2012

“Kate’s best bits….”
1. 6th June: Diamond Jubilee concert – Kate and Harry appear in pictures jaded and hungover.

2. 8th July: Kate attends Wimbledon with sister Pippa (who gets more mentions) to watch Roger Federer vs Andy Murray.

3. 27 July: Kate attends the Olympic opening ceremony.

4. 30th Aug: East Asia tour announced Kate and William attend cycling events at the Paralympics.

5. 11th Sept: The tour of East Asia begins in Singapore.

6. 14th Sept: The Royal couple arrive in Kuala Lumpur as photos of Kate sunbathing topless in Provence emerge in the French press.

7. 18th Sept: French court bars further publication of the photos… in France.

8. 10th Oct: The Duke and Duchess open the New National Football centre greeted by various England players (their first outing since the topless photo scandal).

9. 28th Nov: Kate Middleton sports new fringe and pregnancy rumours surge.

10. 3rd Dec: Pregnancy rumours confirmed as Kate is admitted to hospital with acute morning sickness.

11. 6th Dec: Kate leaves Hospital pictured ‘blooming’ with a bunch of flowers in hand.

So Kate’s year has been a whirlwind with a lot of pressure from all directions on the new Duchess. Kate has carried herself immaculately and taught us all a lesson in terms of celebrity lifestyle: If anyone publishes topless photos of you, get pregnant immediately and you will be forgiven by the time the year is out. Nicely played, Kate and congratulations.

The Fri-Up: Leveson.

The Leveson enquiry, a year long enquiry into malpractice in the UK’s press has now been published. Launched off the back of last summer’s phone hacking allegations, we started tracking the topics as the phone hacking allegations levelled at News International reached fever pitch. Triggering Murdoch’s shut down of one of the most iconic and contentious British newspapers. We look back at how it played out across social media since we first started tracking events as they began to unfold in summer 2011.

Looking back at the Brandwatch wordcloud from July 2011, we see that the discussion centred around very specific cases rather than questioning the freedom of the UK press as a whole.

Fig 1. Wordcloud from July 2011

At the time, we also compared mentions of key figures in the phone hacking scandal on Twitter in a Brandwatch dataviz. We created a virtual pie throwing contest, a nod towards actions within the initial select committee hearing and Rupert Murdoch being the unexpected target of a custard pie by a protester.

A year on, after an extensive enquiry, more embarrassing revelations on the government’s links to the press and further claims of hacking by various celebrities, the social media landscape looks somwhat different.

Fig 2. Leveson: Topics line graph from Nov 23rd to Nov 30th 2012

Although many of the same players feature, there are several new contenders into the mix. The biggest spike is provoked by Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg – going against David Cameron – recommending a new independent body to regulate the press. An honourable mention must also be given to Korean music and dance sensation PSY, who’s hit Gangnam Style has managed to infiltrate yet another Friday# topic cloud. This time, worryingly, via the Liberal Democrats’ Christmas party.

The Fri-Up: Black Friday Bun Fight.

In the UK, we don’t have an equivalent to Black Friday and each year, we watch from the other side of the pond, amazed as YouTube videos are circulated showing shoppers in wrestles for $5 headphones and the best deals in Walmart. Also, unlike the Ikea riot a few years ago in the UK (provoked by a sale at a store opening), the shoppers all look excited and happy to be a part of the ritual.

With retailers opening earlier than ever, Black Friday shoppers have slammed down their Turkey and rushed out to the sales earlier than ever, the mayhem starting for some shops at midnight last night. We’ve looked at some of the US’s biggest chains, to see who has won the social media race for shoppers’ attention.

Fig 1. Volume of Mentions of Black Friday and retailers

Walmart’s deals came top of shoppers lists with Target close behind as one of the earliest to open – on Thursday night – and Best Buy completing the top three. All three of the stores simultaneously kicked off online sales in conjunction with their bricks and mortar scrambles.

Fig 2. Black Friday vs Cyber Monday

For us in the UK, the best is yet to come. In recent years, Cyber Monday has been a celebration we also have had access to as online retailers like Amazon have rushed to make their sales global. As yet, the buzz surrounding Cyber Monday has not hit the heights of Black Friday.

Perhaps the online mayhem will build over the weekend, or the online versions of Black Friday may have made the phrase redundant. There is also the possibility that would be shoppers would rather not alert others the the deals in fear of losing out themselves. Ready… set…

The Sauce:

Your weekly round-up of the hottest stories worldwide, served with a slice of topical social media analysis and a dollop of Friday fun

The Sizzle:

Spotify picks up $100m

The Fri-Up: Spotify.

It has been a good week for streaming giant, Spotify. Not only has the company picked up $100m of investment, but in the same week, the service has also brought streaming delight to Luxembourg and Ireland, bringing its total territories worldwide to 17.

When we last looked at Spotify for the Friday# the service had just opened in The States. There was much speculation about whether Daniel Ek and his streaming service would be able to raise enough money to cover the costs of the streaming rights charged by record labels for tracks. With massive investment from Coke – apparently the world’s second most understood word after OK, as well as the global drinks company – and high profile investment bank Goldman Sachs this week, they’re hardly likely to be strapped for cash for a while. In return, the brand and the bank borrow a much needed slice of Spotify cool.

If we look at Spotify mentions over the last couple of months, we begin to build a picture of their users and their habits.

Fig 1. History graph of Spotify mentions for the last two months

Firstly, they are generally still rising. Secondly, the mentions dip at the weekends and are mainly on Twitter, telling us a little more about the Spotify demographic.

So brands are keen to jump on board and earlier this year Spotify made a big deal about opening its platform to developers to create apps which many media channels have made use of. However, the obvious omission in Spotify’s fans are the artists which provide its content.

Mostly when we look at top tweeters on any given subject, since music stars are some of the highest profile tweeters, at least a few show up in our list. In the list below, for Spotify, they are notably absent among the media channels and tech blogs (@onedirection is run by Syco with little input from the boys and @1dnews is a fan account as is @Misslaurynhill).

Fig 2. Top Tweeters for Spotify

@onedirection
@aplusk (Ashton Kuchter)
@billboard
@ComplexMag
@CNET
@Misslaurynhill
@MTVNews
@pitchforkmedia
@Spotify

It is no secret that artists and Spotify don’t get on due to the micropayment per stream. Lady Gaga famously earnt just $167 for 1million streams. It is no wonder that to promote their work, they tend to prefer to point to YouTube and Soundcloud accounts. The new question is, whether Spotify survive on financial backing alone without the support of the artists. Answer: while people will go to great lengths to interact with and support their favourite bands, Spotify is offering free legal music….so probably!

The Sauce:

The Fri-Up: Bob Dylan’s Facebook debut.

There have been quite a few notable milestones in social media this week, the first being Obama’s “Four More Years” tweet stealing Justin Bieber’s Twitter retweet record. The second big milestone and one we are pretty excited about is Bob Dylan posting his first Facebook update. Whether this marks the start of an unstoppable social media commentary by the star, or whether it was purely the highly charged emotion of Tuesday’s result that moved him to write, we are yet to find out.

With over 4m likes on his page and just one status update from the star himself, he has the capacity for social media stardom. Although Dylan’s support for Obama has never been secret, he is not usually one to publicly comment on politics. Rolling Stone magazine tried and failed to get Dylan to profess his love for Obama in an interview earlier this month to which he responded: “You should be asking his wife what she thinks of him,” …… “He loves music. He’s personable. He dresses good. What the f**k do you want me to say?”

In the history graph below, we’ve taken a look at his last month across social media culminating in his support for the President.

Fig 1. History graph for mentions of Bob Dylan from 9th October until 9th November 2012

Obama’s win and Dylan’s first Facebook post arguably prompted the biggest spike in the last month, the second largest being his collaboration on a book through Johnny Depp’s publishing imprint. However, in order to put Obama in perspective of Dylan’s social media mentions across the board, it helps to look at a wordcloud across the same period.

Fig 2. Wordcloud to show topics mentioned near Bob Dylan from 9th October to 9th November 2012

Although Obama does feature heavily in the cloud, so do a raft of names from across the international entertainment scene. Bob Dylan, unsurprisingly has a host of famous friends, of which Obama is just one. Hopefully his first foray into social media has inspired him and we’ll be hearing more from the big man soon.

The Fri-Up: The Mercury Music Prize.

The Mercury Music Award is one of the most prestigious prizes in the UK Music calendar. It annually honours the best album from the UK and Ireland and it has a reputation for breaking down the barriers in awarding the album to the best musically produced ‘body of work’ placing little relevance on album sales or notoriety. Due to the depths from which nominations are pulled and also because nominations are chosen by a panel of musicians, music executives, journalists and other figures in the music industry, it is notoriously difficult to predict the winner.

We at Brandwatch placed our bets with the bookies weeks ago, knowing that for this particularly illusive prize, scouring social networks would provide little insight as to how music industry judges would vote a few days before. After the event however, it gives us the opportunity to see how internationally famous artists like Plan B line up alongside the little known acts such as Field Music, and how the nomination for the Mercury prize has shaped their social media journey.

In the interests of leveling the field, mentions were reqired to feature the artist in conjunction with either their Mercury nominated album title, or Mercury. The history graph belows shows mentions of each act from the day that the nominations were announced until the day before the winner was revealed.

Fig 1. History graph of mentions for nominees from 11th Sept to 31st October.

Looking at mentions across the month, although Alt-J were fairly prominent as the nominees were announced, they generally dipped over the course of the month. Psychadelic quartet, Django Django, did noticably better, helped in their standings by a slew of festival appearances over the summer as well as a late September and October tour. Plan B, as an established artist, peaked early as his album hit the Mobo nominations just days after his Mercury nom. Richard Hawley benefitted from a single release on the week ending October 1st.

Fig 2. Percentage of mentions from 11th Sept to 31st October 2012.

If we look at the number of mentions across the whole judging period, Alt J are convincing contenders despite a large proportion of their mentions being racked up in the first 24 hours. Django Django are however the ‘people’s winners’ topping the internationally famous Plan B in terms of Mercury mentions.

That’s it for another year. Unfortunately for Alt-J, the Mercury Prize has a reputation for a curse that goes with it and a nomination doesn’t necessarily equal greatly increased sales or mainstream popularity. That said, 2010 winners The XX bucked this trend and the prize launched them into relative superstardom and lucrative snyc deals from Hollyoaks to Call Of Duty.

Brandwatch’s US Electoral Compass

Which issues are most important to voters in the battle for the White House?

With the presidential election almost upon us, the push to win voters will become even more crucial over the next few days. The election race has been a tight one so far, sowe’ve taken to social media to see what ‘the people’ really think. Social media is becoming increasingly significant as a source of insight to political attitudes.

Presenting the Brandwatch US Electoral Compass 2012.

How to use the compass:

• Choose a state from the menu on the left.

• Choose different weeks of data, since July, at the bottom.

• On the right hand side, you can see the importance ranking of the 30 biggest policy areas according to social media chat in that state.

• The compass in the middle shows stats about the policies, broken down by Obama and Romney focused tweets and press.

The Fri-Up: The Bond Brands.

As Skyfall heads towards its first weekend at the box office, brands associated with the film also eagerly await its impact. Fans have questioned the new Bond film’s heavy association with advertisers, particuarly as product placement for the franchise hits a new high.

A particular link up that has riled fans this year is a change in Bond’s drink allegiance. In an early scene in the film, Daniel Craig reaches for an ice-cold Heineken rather than his usual shaken vodka martini. When you hear that the Dutch drinks giant paid £28m for the privilege, his switch suddenly makes sense. Both Daniel Craig and Sam Mendez have spoken out in support of the Bond brands and the fact that advertising has afforded them to make such a spectacular film. Bond films have never been renowned for economy in their production.

From M’s Sony Vaio hardware to James’ Tom Ford suits, the brands are plenty. Some are relying on their placement in the film to sell their products, while others have launched huge advertising campaigns to show their association in advance of the film’s release. We’ve lined up a few of the biggest to see how the last two months has impacted on their social media mentions.

Fig 1. Mentions of The Bond Brands across social media for Sept/Oct 2012.

The graph shows that although Heineken came top in terms of advertising money, the decision to usevintage James Bond car, the Aston Martin DB5, out of mothballs and then auction it for charity has the edge. Omega also rates highly in the mentions, but much of this chat is surrounding a comparison of the drink switch from vodka martini to beer, with Bond’s hammy Omega plug in Quantum of Solace, when asked if he is wearing a Rolex. Fig 2. A few of our favourite Heineken/Bond tweets:

@theGarfie Someone said there’s a Skyfall cocktail, I from what I’ve heard it’s a Sony brand phone floating in a glass of Heineken… On a Virgin train

@RantDad Since James Bond has switched from Vodka Martinis toHeineken lager, maybe he could trade in his Aston Martin for a Transit van?

@zuckerbeckers Heard that #JamesBond wears a Rolex drinks Heineken drives an Aston Martin shops in Iceland and goes to Mecca Bingo in #Skyfall#advertising

@ConorLynn Why has James Bond’s drink changed from Martini to Heineken? He is a slick spy, not a balding 45 year old who lives in Wetherspoon’s.

@mark_geary Heineken have paid 50m dollars to have james bond drink a bottle in the new movie. but it will still kill me if i drink it! #teamcoeliac

The Fri-Up: Gary McKinnon.

Gary McKinnon was accused in 2002 of perpetrating the biggest military computer hack in history. The Scottish systems administrator who successfully hacked into the Pentagon’s computer has always maintained that he was merely looking for evidence of free energy suppression and a cover-up of UFO activity and other technologies potentially useful to the public.

With his fate having hung in the balance for ten years so far, this week a landmark block on his extradition to The States was granted, based on a medical report showing that McKinnon had Aspergers Syndrome. This diagnosis put into question whether it was against McKinnon’s human rights to extradite him to the US for trial.

Using the Brandwatch topic history graph, you can see how events this week panned out as well as the issues surrounding the case.

Fig 1. History graph of topics surrounding Gary McKinnon

The medical report was released on October 12th, confirming that McKinnon has Aspergers Syndrome and the subsequent rulling by Home Secretary Theresa May was made on 16th. The top tweeters surrounding the McKinnon case are interesting. With apparently so much at stake according to the US government you might think it would be they watching and reporting the news – as a deterrent and warning to would be hackers.

guardiantech

BBCNews

TheNextWeb

Interestingly in fact, it is the tech blogs who are the most prolific tweeters with all eyes of potential hackers watching to see where this landmark case goes – perhaps in light of their own intentions!

The Fri-Up: Eton Alive.

While the political race heats up across the pond, this week, we have also been experiencing an unexpected political challenge of our own. As the Conservative Party Conference rolled into Birmingham, behind the back patting and Cameron’s announcement that his political goal was to make the rest oft the country as priveledged as him, there was an unmistakeable air of Eton rivalry.

Buxom buffoon Boris Johnson arrived into town, stealing David Cameron’s thunder on his birthday. The reception to the London Mayor was unprecedented for a party conference with crowds chanting ‘Boris, Boris!’.

Not known for his subtlety, Boris’ first fringe meeting featured the presentation “Boris 2012: Re-elected and Olympotastic” preceded by a promotional film entitled “Mission Imborrisible” featuring the East London Olympic zip-wire incident.

Of course, Boris challenged anyone to “doubt my admiration for David Cameron” and Dave equally batted off remarks that he was jealous of Boris’ popularity. But we like a fight on the Friday# so we thought we’d pitch the two Eton adversaries in a battle for social media supremecy.

Firstly, lets look at the history graph. Despite the vocal chants at the party conference, below David Cameron convincingly wins the battle for online noise. Could it be that Johnson’s prime ministerial dreams are indeed ‘Imborrisible’?

Fig 1. Boris vs Dave history graph

Now let’s look at the hardcore policies of each, by virtue of a handy Brandwatch wordcloud.

The Fri-Up: 007 Fever.

The countdown to the next James Bond, Skyfall, has officially started. It’s hard to believe with his ever youthful looks and incredible agility but in a year of 50th anniversaries (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones) James Bond (the film franchise) is also 50 this year. The excitement has been building for a while but things accellerated this week when Skyfall’s theme tune was leaked online and Adele then confirmed via Twitter that she was indeed the voice. Cue a hasty digital release of the track today.

Fig 1. History graph of James Bond mentions over the last 14 days

So we see the spike for the leak of the theme tune on 30th September, and subsequently Adele’s confirmation, but by far the most noise comes from the official release – seems we’re not all pirates!

We don’t need to prove to you that almost everybody loves James Bond – but we can, so we thought we would below.

Fig 2. Positive vs Negative sentiment surrounding James Bond 21st Sept – 5th Oct 2012

As we race towards the official release of Skyfall on 23rd October, we’ll be keeping an eye on the stats and see if the film lives up to the initial buzz… ultimately though, we all know that James Bond is invincible.

The Fri-Up: Magna Carta.

As we all know, the Magna Carta is an ancient document that sets out a ‘Great Charter’ for the United Kingdom.. The UK’s first Prime Minister to appear on the Letterman show, David Cameron, embarrassingly had ‘no idea’ what the latin name acutally meant. He also failed to identify the composer of Rule Britannia in front of an audience of millions. Fellow Etonian and Oxford University contemporary, London Mayor Boris Johnson, has accused the PM of ‘dumbing down’ for the show to apparently prove that he’s just like us. Boris is potentially bitter that he failed his man of the people test on Letterman, when he did not know who scored a hat trick in the 1966 world cup.

Whatever the truth, in honour of the PM’s shortfalls or similarity to his people, we thought we’d take a look at how widely the term Magna Carta is used. We’ve turned to social media, and in fact all online media to check this out.

Fig 1. History graph for mentions of Magna Carta

The mentions across the month show that Magna Carta is not an every day subject for most people. A quick sift through shows that most mentions are references to legal proceedings in which the document is still sometimes cited. Other mentions included the sale of artwork depicting King John sealing the ‘Great Charter’ as well as a London folk rock band who are about to embark on their South African tour.

Fig 2. Graph showing page types for mentions of Magna Carta

Looking at the spread of mentions, of course there was a lot of banter on Twitter laughing at the Prime Minister (widely believed to have been educated mainly in Latin). The mainstream media, however, also seized on the subject, but rather than simply reporting Cameron’s failure, they used it as an excuse to promote features on the charter itself, unearthing Magna Carta experts who had seemingly lain dormant for hundreds of years. Maybe Cameron’s plan ran even deeper than Boris insinuated. In his fluffing of the question, he has educated the people!

The Fri-Up: Maps Meltdown.

The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system landed at 6pm UK time on Wednesday delivering with it Apple’s own version of maps. Although users in large US cities only noticed a few annoying differences (including the Statue of Liberty disappearing and the Washington Monument going missing), the UK and Europe went into map meltdown. As in any crisis, the world turned to Twitter to bemoan that they were lost, ironically sending Google Maps trending on Twitter.

This only added to Apple’s heavy week which had already featured more mocking of Apple fans from Samsung and more claims of design copy by Apple, this time by a Swiss railway. Thankfully for Apple, the attention seems to be switching to Blackberry today with problems plaguing their network in Europe the Middle East and Africa.

As we know, a technological crisis can often bring out the best in people and with it, a community spirit. The ever efficient London Underground moved swiftly to aid any customers who might be in trouble due to the new maps feature.

…. and here are a few of our favourite tweets from the fallout.Fig 2. Selected tweets mentioning iOS 6 Maps

The Fri-Up: KMiddy vs Moyles

Another week, another naked royal picture. This time it is the turn of French magazine Closer France to print pictures of a brown haired woman, allegedly Kate Middleton, sunbathing topless. The US magazines and websites have this time steered clear with friend of the royals, the Huffington Post, even helpfully diverting readers away from the photos with headlines like: “Kate Middleton Pregnant For Real? Duchess Reportedly Turns Down Wine At TWO Different Events (PHOTOS)”.

2012 has done a lot for the public support of the royals and perhaps people are getting bored of royal bashing as they bat off yet another scandal. Or, perhaps bigger more life threatening events like anti US riots across the Middle East sparked by anti Islamic film The Innocence Of Muslims have been deemed more important this time. Apparently not the case, since the Kate story remains top of the page on most of the UK’s news sites. However, do the social media stats follow this trend?

Although Kate and Closer have periodically trended on Twitter in the UK, there is no sign of the story worldwide in trends – admittedly the iPhone 5 has dominated worldwide trends for the last 24 hours. The Kate story has also failed to beat Chris Moyles leaving Radio 1 or Ricky Hatton announcing a comeback in terms of constant twitter trends in the UK.

Fig 1. Twitter trends UK 11.30am

If we look at the Kate Middleton wordcloud of mentions across the week although the topless photos are obviously this morning’s biggest Kate Middleton story, mentions of the photos have not yet exceeded the focus on her fashion and the Duke and Duchess’s South East Asia tour.

The Fri-Up: Harry the Hat (but no trousers)

Whether it’s been a bad or good week for Prince Harry is yet to be decided. The palace has stuck by him and he’s been praised by people across the country from public school rugby teams to bricklayers from Bradford as ‘being just like us’.

The Sun has rebelled and printed ‘Prince Harry the pictures you’ve already seen on the internet’ in order that the many millions of people who get their news in print, or have no web access can finally take part in a national converstation from which they had apparently previously been excluded before actually seeing Harry naked.

With all the good work behind him for the Olympics and the Jubilee, it’s easy to guess at which of the three events gained him the biggest online notoriety:

Fig 1. History graph for Prince Harry.

The spike at the beginnig of June shows mentions of the prince on Jubilee weekend, notably at the Jubilee concert partying but apparently looking hungover with sister in law Kate Middleton. The next larger than average spike sees Harry at the Olympic closing ceremony. One week on he hits Vegas.

Fig 2.Wordcloud for Prince Harry

The wordcloud above shows how the story of Seamus and his terrifying journey continues to creep into issues surrounding Mitt Romney’s policital career nearly 30 years after the unfortunate event.

The Fri-Up: Mitt Romney’s dog

It has re-emerged this week that Mitt Romney drove for twelve hours with his dog Seamus strapped on top of his car in a kennel. Romney’s admission and defence of the action regularly appeared in negative media coverage during the 2008 presidential election. It continues to ‘dog’ him during his campaign for the 2012. This week, previously forgotten punk band Devo have reignited the anger releasing a song in tribute to Seamus ‘Don’t Roof Rack me Bro’.

Obama hasn’t been without his share of negative dog press. He revealed memories of sampling dog meat in South East Asia (where dog meat is a common delicacy) in his autobiography. However, unsurprisingly, far more has been made of Mitt Romney’s cruel carriage of his red setter than of Obama’s story.

Fig 1. History graph of mentions of Mitt Romney in conjunction with his dog Seamus.

The spike on August 15th, when the single was released shows how Devo’s sympathy with Mitt Romney’s dog has afforded them unaccustomed pick up across multiple news networks and potentially access to a new generation of dog lovers.

Fig 2. Wordcloud for Mitt Romney and his dog Seamus.

The Fri-Up: Boris Johnson vs Usain Bolt

It’s a while since we’ve pitched two adversaries against each other in the Friday#, but then it’s a while since we’ve had two such worthy parties. Usain Bolt, double Olympic gold medal winner and the fastest man on earth. Boris Johnson, an athlete (well, keen cyclist), Mayor of London and Olympic mascot alongside Wenlock and Mandeville.

So let’s take a look at the last two weeks. In terms of volume, the disparity between the two is not as great as you might think.

Fig 1. Volume for Boris Johnson vs Usain Bolt July 27th – August 10th 2012

So let’s see what happened by looking closer at events that brought Boris and Bolt within a hair’s breadth of each other.

Fig 2. History graph of Boris Johnson vs Usain Bolt

Here we see it. Boris Johnson’s high wire suspension display was around 2/3rds as popular as Bolt’s 100m sprint. In case you missed it here it is again.

So what do we take from this? What we take is that with two bites at the cherry, Boris could be our biggest potential for future Olympics. With just one Olympic feat, Boris Johnson has come THIS close to equalling the popularity of the fastest man on earth. Just imagine if he’d had the same opportunity at two events like rival Usain Bolt… ipso facto – Boris for Rio 2016! (try to ignore visions of potential beachwear).

The Fri-Up: Guy Adams vs NBC

Now one week in, there is no getting away from an Olympic theme for the Friday# but rather than boast about England’s medal haul or Boris Johnson’s endless talent extending to aerial acrobatics, we thought we’d look at the social media side of things.

On 30th July, NBC complained to Twitter that Independent journalist, Guy Adams should have his account shut down for quoting one of their employees personal email addresses. Twitter obliged and shut the account down after the tweet was highlighted, which infact was their corporate address. On further reflection, it transpired that Adams had been criticising their coverage of the Olympics and as Adams argued, what he had published had not been a ‘personal’ email address, but in fact a corporate account ‘available to anyone with access to Google’.

Predictably, the episode sparked thousands of angry comments on Twitter, including comments supportive of Mr Adams from BBC journalist Jeremy Vine, and Piers Morgan, the former editor of the Daily Mirror who now works for CNN. The novelist Irvine Welsh posted the the following comment online: “The Guy Adams twitter ban illustrates three tendencies of hegemonic power; 1) hates criticism, 2) takes itself seriously 3) no sense of fun.”

Fig 1. Top Sites for Guy Adams vs NBC

If we look at the top news sites where the story was mentioned, NBC, an Olympic sponsor is notably absent in responding to why they had suspended the account of Guy Adams. Fig 2.Wordcloud for Guy Adams vs NBC

The word cloud above tells the story and here’s Guy Adams’ response

Facebook reports loss

As we mentioned last week in the Friday#, we’ve teamed up with Mediacom Sport to create an Olympic Buzz Board. This displays real-time mentions of the Olympic sponsors, the total volume of mentions as well as the sentiment around the brands involved.

Each sponsor is represented by its own athlete-worm, with the adjacent number showing how many Olympic-related tweets have been posted about that brand over the last 28 days.

With Boris Johnson bellowing out of stations across London and the Olympic organisers brushing up on their flags of the world to avoid any more embarrasing mistakes, the start of the Olympics is now just hours away. This week we dedicate the Friday# to taking a look at the Sponsors’ standings as we head in to the first big weekend.

Fig 1. The Olympic brand buzz rankings

The leaderboard above shows the current standings as we head into the games (for the last 28 days to yesterday). McDonalds is firmly in the lead with Coca Cola, Adidas, Samsung and Cadburys making up the top five.

Samsung and Coca-Cola, have secured their places in the top five this week through their association the torch relay which reached its climax this week. Coca Cola’s particular focus has been music, mixing high profile artists with the up-and-coming, culminating in yesterday’s Olympic torch race finale show in Hyde Park yesterday, headlined by Dizzee Rascal. Samsung has been supporting the nation’s health with its hope relay, donating a pound for every mile walked, run or cycled, recorded by users on their mobile app, thus happily balancing out the burgers and chocolate and completing the top five on our board.

Another issue surrounding the games, highlighted here by our Cadbury’s worm, is how the games are actually allowed to be referred or referenced to and by whom. There has been much confusion surrounding the rights of people to mention or depict the games aside from the official sponsors.

Just this week Hamdy Shahein, a well-liked local newsagent in Stoke Newington, East London, whose shop happened to be on the Olympic torch route, was ordered by enforcement officers from Hackney Council to take down what they perceived to be non-regulation bunting and balloons to support the torch through his community. A bagel shop also got into trouble for hanging five bagels in its front window and nightclub owner Peter Stringfellow had problems when he took a picture of Tower Bridge for his website (The bridge bears the Olympic symbol for the duration of the games).

Here’s a quick look at how Nike got round branding regulationswith their Find Your Greatness campaign.

And in the news … the press pack are keeping a close eye on the response to such tight control. Sky News asked us to look at the social chat around the Olympic sponsors as part of their report which you can watch here.

You can be part of our buzz tracker too. By using the #ILoveLondon hashtag, you can secure your place on the buzz board as our Londoner worm vocalises your thoughts on the Olympic city.

Olympic Sponsors Twitter Tracker

You can also keep an eye on our Twitter Tracker, also produced as part of our MediaCom SPORT partnership. Check out the latest commentary from MediaCom SPORT based on a combination of our data and analysis and MediaCom Sport’s insight and performance indicator. The tracker pulls in Twitter mentions of each sponsor, and awards a performance score based upon a dedicated formula (featuring sentiment, engagement and reach metrics), before ranking them in a league table.

Brandwatch has released its second annual Customer Services Index report. We looked at how brands and sectors measure up to each other in terms of customer service online and how the leading brands are doing it right.

The 2012 study, released this month, found that although brands have had a year to learn from the lessons offered by social media feedback, customer satisfaction levels still have not improved. Only three of the 40 brands analysed emerged with a score above zero – indicating that their customer service experience was successful overall. In fact, over half (52 per cent) of all customer service experiences were classified as negative. Only John Lewis (who came top), Waitrose and B&Q receive positive scores inthis year’s report which you can download for free here.

The findings of the study were also presented Our Social Times webinar on ‘How to use social media for customer service’. You can view the webinar here and click on ‘View the recording’

The Fri-Up: The G4S Summit

The security shambles surrounding the games has been one of the biggest kept secrets of the Olympic Legacy so far. Last week security firm G4S admitted to a series of revelations including missing uniforms potentially in the ‘wrong hands’, the hefty requirement for army security support and their Wimbledon staff having been caught sleeping on the job.

As Brits, we’re not known for looking on the bright side and predictably, the world of social media and traditional went into a complete spin.

Here’s how the last couple of weeks went in terms of volume:

Fig 1. History graph for mentions of G4S

Until the last couple of weeks G4S was little known and not much talked about as the security firm responsible for London’s biggest ever celebration of sport. As revelations emerged, the social media world became obsessed as the story played out like a plot line of the BBC’s Twenty Twelve spoof documentary series charting the organisation of the Olympics.

The wordcloud quickly gives us a run down of issues as well as the various insults aimed at the beleaguered security firm.

Our personal favourite reference: ‘change a lightbulb’.

The Fri-Up: O2… Et tu?

It’s been a bad week for mobile network O2. The UK network, whose slogan is ‘We’re better connected’ dropped out of service for thousands of customers yesterday for the second time in two weeks. Technical failures also blighted Blackberry last year and the brand has arguably failed to recover despite offering £60 for each of those affected to spend on apps from its store. NatWest and RBS have also been hit by technical glitches in the last few weeks and have offered customers refunds on charges incurred by not being able to access funds for around seven days. We take a look at mentions for O2 and its beleagured network over the last few days.

Fig 1. History graph to show mentions and sentiment around O2′s network by hour from 12am 11th July to 6am 13th July.

The graph shows how the problems unfolded by the hour reaching a peak of around 10k mentions per hour as O2 customers vented their frustrations via social media, mainly on Twitter. This query is specific to mentions talking about the network outage as they head online to share experiences, complain to O2 and try to ascertain when it is likely to be fixed. As yet, O2 has not offered any compensation for the problems. The Brandwatch data reveals more still, as we can get a list of O2′s celebrity customers from our top tweeters component. Here we go: Fig 2 Tweeters, by influence, for O2′s network outage

So there we have it: some pretty high profile, yet fairly diverse, people affected. They range from This Morning presenter Philip Schofield to the rapper Professor Green. There’s also author Chris Cowlin and Rochelle from The Saturdays… not to mention the (fake) Queen and Charlotte from Geordie Shore. Devastating to think what their nearest and dearest must have missed via phone and text. Thankfully for us, we didn’t miss a thing as their Twitter remained unaffected.

The Fri-Up: Stone Roses sadness

The lack of Glastonbury this year hasn’t stopped British music dominating the wet summer. This summer marks two significant milestones so far: the celebration of 50 years of The Rolling Stones and the Stone Roses’ reunion gigs. Both in the news for many reasons, good and bad.

The Stone Roses played a sodden Heaton Park last weekend for their Manchester homecoming gigs and are now set to play this weekend’s Saturday headline slot at Scotland’s T In the Park, Kinross. The rain didn’t dampen fans’ enthusiasm at last weekend’s gigs, demostrated by the fact that their album The Very Best Of The Stone Roses (Released in 2002), is set to re-enter the top ten this weekend. The Heaton Park gigs were a seeming triumph for the band. But as we take a look back over the week in social media, a different story emerges.

Below we see the haunting Stone Roses wordcloud. Within social media, the landmark gigs many thought would never happen are completely overshadowed by the sad disappearance of one of their fans after Friday’s concert and the subsequent social media campaign to find him.

Fig 1. Stone Roses wordcloud 29th June – 6th July 2012

Many people local to the gig felt frustrated that the mainstream media hadn’t done enough to help find Chris Brahney as expressed by this fan below on Tumblr. ”This is f***g 2012 how is there not enough media and services to find someone. People have organised searches and are handing out flyers on their own behalf. i feel like the media are doing f**k all at the moment, which is ridiculous, as they can be of great help in cases like this.” If we look at the breakdown below, although we often see social media mentions higher as news stories are passed around, the contrast between numbers of mentions here is much more significant than usual. The fans may have been right.

Fig 2. Stone Roses by page type 29th June – 6th July 2012

We hope that Chris Brahney is found safe and that the social media campaign does unearth more information on his whereabouts. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

The Fri-Up: Cam you really?

David Cameron has had a bit of a headache this week, in complete contrast to last week’s jubilant nation where even torrential rail couldn’t put a dampener on the country’s celebrations. This week revelations have included the fact that he left his child in a pub and the publication of more embarrassing texts between him and Rebekah Brooks. LOL.

Can Brandwatch uncover which event over the last couple of months has earned him the most chat? Yes we Cam!

Let’s look at all the issues at stake in the DC two month wordcloud:

Fig 1. David Cameron wordcloud from April 15 to Jun 15 2012

David Cameron has had a heavy couple of months, with various ups and downs including fears on the eurocrisis, answering back to Argentina, the joy of the Jubilee and the scrutiny of the Levenson enquiry.

By taking a look at the history graph, we can see which of those produced the largest amount of attention across social media over the last two months.

Fig 2. David Cameron history graph from April 15 to June 15

The two largest spikes in the graph both occur in this week. The largest of these was when news broke (on Tuesday) that David Cameron left his 8 year old daughter in the pub after a Sunday Lunch, the second largest (yesterday) was prompted by the revelation in yesterday’s Levenson enquiry, of the Yes We Cam text from Rebekah Brooks.
